A great piece, and interesting choice of songs (I’ll have to wait until tomorrow to play them). I left my home country in 94 and returned in 07. A good friend told me after 5 years you can’t go back. I did, and it was difficult, I dropped most of my old friends, but lived on. Now after nearly 20 years I’m back in that country again and it feels all new again. I have to say I’ve been lucky to create a new life each time, though the streets of my old town will always beckon. Reminds me to check out The Go- Betweens “Streets of your Town”. Thanks for the thought provoking writing.

Well it was a lot more tricky to maintain long distance friendships back then with no communicators. Thanks for The Go-Betweens recommendation, that part reminds me of Poland 😝

Where do you feel the most at home now @Spotbanana?

“Where do you feel most at home?” Well, I hadn’t thought about it until now! I’d say where I am in northeastern Thailand in the house my partner and I had built a couple of years ago. My hometown, Sydney, will remain my hometown, but not to live in. As Neil Young sang, “I need a crowd of people, but I can’t face them day to day.” We’ve built a home life here. But like you, I feel a foreigner in both places. Not in a negative sense, mind you. I’d be interested to hear what others have experienced.

I could think of worse places to call home 😅 I'd love to come to Thailand someday for a few weeks of Muay Thai camp.

Make sure to check out Scooter Blues then, it might resonate with you even more than it did with me :)

Wow amazing article!

As an imigrant in Switzerland I can say the honeymoon phase kicks in only after a year or two 😁
